What is IPMI?

IPMI (Intelligent Platform Management Interface) is a set of standardised specifications for hardware-based platform management systems making it possible to control and monitor servers remotely. It allows System administrators the ability to manage and monitor primary server functions.

Most server administrators connect to their servers via Remote Desktop to Windows Servers or SSH for Linux, which are perfect for general access to manage your server remotely.

But what do you do if you need to do any work that lives outside the operating system?

For example:  say you needed to change your network configuration settings? Or what about if you wanted to change your boot up configuration to boot from a disk image (ISO) remotely?

Those common access methods of RDP & SSH will not allow you to do this as they rely on the main operating system to be up and running to be able to function.

Historically, admins used to mount a keyboard and monitor to servers to access the console and make these changes, however today, using IPMI , you can get full console access in the web browser that doesn’t rely on the operating system anymore.

Accessing IPMI

Servers Australia customers can access the IMPI interface through our customer portal at  https://www2.mysau.com.au

This platform is run entirely on a private network to provide the highest level of security for your service.

Once logged in you can click on the server you wish to manage and choose the IPMI login option.

You will then be presented with a login screen.

Once you have logged in you will see the following landing page.

The core features of IPMI most clients will use are:

    • Remote Console (KVM – Keyboard, Video and Mouse)
    • Full Power Control for Powering the server on & off.
  • Ability to mount an ISO for any custom software installations or bootable operating system disks.

Depending on your product you may also be able to monitor things like fans, temperatures, power consumption, CPU and memory etc.

As you can see there is plenty of power options to choose from and these are handy when self-managed servers need a reboot for any reason.

Most IPMI consoles either work with JAVA or HTML5 client software, this is all dependent on what generation server you purchase.

As mentioned, this is where you mount the ISO or any software disks for custom software installs to your Dedicated Infrastructure.
